Mounting pressure on Bangladesh to crack down on Indian insurgents, the Border Security Force (BSF) has proposed to the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) that they undertake joint operations in each other’s territory to dismantle camps of insurgents working against Delhi and Dhaka.
BSF Director General Ajay Raj Sharma on his return from Dhaka after attending the annual BSF-BDR conference, said: ‘‘We have given them a list of 194 training camps of Indian insurgents in Bangladesh. They denied the existence of such camps and instead gave us a list of 37 camps in India which they allege are being used to train Bangladesh insurgents.’’
‘‘We made them an offer: let us go back to our respective governments with a suggestion. Let the BSF be allowed inside Bangladesh territory, find the camps and be part of a joint operation to destroy them. And if they want to do the same on our territory, they can come along with us and show us the camps.’’
Sharma said there were no specifics on the camps mentioned by Bangladesh. In five cases, the addresses were those of border outposts. ‘‘If you go through the list, it appears ridiculous. In some cases, there’s only the name of a person and a district. In most cases, the addresses are incomplete.’’
Sharma said it was in the interest of Bangladesh to act on the Indian list: ‘‘Sooner or later, Bangladesh will have to do something about those terrorists. If you ride a tiger, you have to pay the price for it.’’
The BSF had expressed concern over the recovery of a huge pile of arms and ammunition in Chittagong last month. ‘‘Last year, arms were recovered from Bogura. This year, there was an arms haul which we are convinced was meant for terrorist groups operating either in the North-East or the Kashmir Valley.’’
