
CHANDIGARH, Nov 18: THE three day Punjab University Youth Festival Zone B’ concluded organised by DAV College, Sector 10 concluded today with competitions held in gidha, bhangra and other dances.
Large crowds from all the five participating colleges thronged the main hall to enjoy the gidha and bhangra performances apart from the Ghumar dance of Haryana. Few students were also seen dancing to the zestful beats of the folk dances and mercifully, there was no indiscipline of any kind. Shobha Kauser, noted Kathak exponent presided over the folk dance session. She expressed satisfaction at the response and the performances of various teams.
Earlier, budding writers and poets participated in the creative writing contests. A total of 17 participants took part in essay writing, short story and poem writing contests. In the realm of fine arts, competitions in clay modelling, collage making and poster making were organised.
The grand finale of the festival was the "Select Show”, a rich spectrum of music and dance presented before an elite audience of intellectuals, educationists, artists and peers in academia. Here, the items which bagged the first prize in various competitions were staged. Presiding over the function, Balramji Dass Tandon, cabinet minister, local government, labour and employment, Punjab called upon the students to bear in mind that they owe a debt to the country, hence they must endeavour to contribute to the national resurgence.
He said that DAV Institutions all over the country have played an enviable role in national reconstruction. He also lauded the students of various colleges. Principal, R.C. Jeewan announced that the college will remain closed tomorrow.
Following are the results of the competitions held today in order of merit:
Gidha: Government College, Sector 46; SGGS College, Sector 26. Among the individual prizes Avinash Kaur of Government College, Sector 46 and Supreet Chauhan of SGGS College, Sector 26 shared the first prize.
Dance (General): GGDSD College, Sector 32; Government College, Sector 11. Kavita of Government College, Sector 46 won the first prize and Davinder of Government College, Sector 11 won the second prize.
Bhangra: SGGS College, Sector 26; GGDSD College, Sector 32. Paramjeet Singh of Government College, Sector 11 and Gurpreet Brar of DAV College, Sector 10 shared the first prize.
Poster Making: Pankaj (DAV College, Sector 10); Sanjeev (Government College, Sector 46).
Clay-Modelling: Aman Bhardwaj (Government College, Sector 46), Amit Batra (DAV College, Sector 10).
Collage Making: Brij Bala (Government College, Sector 46); Gurmeet Singh (Government College, Sector 46).
Creative Writing: Essay Writing: Abhilash Gaur (Government College, Sector 11); Sandeep Kumar (DAV College, Sector 10).
Short Story: Manu (DAV College, Sector 10); Amandeep Shukla (DAV College, Sector 10).
Poem Writing: Vikram (SGGS College, Sector 26); Gurtej Singh (DAV College, Sector 10).
