South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 177 runs in the second of five one-day internationals at Centurion Park on Friday. The hosts lead the five-match series 2-0.

Replying to South Africa’s mammoth score of 317 for 6, Sri Lanka were shot out for 140 in 33.2 overs.

Graeme Smith (99), Boeta Dippenaar and Jacques Kallis all scored half centuries in contrasting ways in South Africa’s total. Kallis raced to his half century off only 24 balls with a six over extra cover having despatched the previous two balls of Hasantha Fernando’s over to the boundary.

But it was a 134-run third wicket partnership between Smith and Dippenaar that was the foundation of the South African innings with both batsmen achieving their highest scores in one- day cricket.
