A Sri Lankan national, accused of smuggling drugs, allegedly committed suicide at the Narcotics Control Bureau’s Basant Nagar office here on Monday morning.

Suresh alias Soori, 41, was in NCB custody. Officers had caught him red-handed on Sunday, while he was trying to hand over a bag containing about 4 kg heroin to another Sri Lankan, Pavan, in front of MGR’s statue near Alandur Municipality on GST Road.

NCB South Zonal Director Shankar Jiwal said Pawan was wanted in four narcotics cases, while Suresh was named in three cases under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Officers were keeping a close watch on Suresh after a tip-off that he was involved in drug smuggling between Lanka and Madhya Pradesh via Chennai. He had been summoned to the NCB’s South Zone office on Sunday in connection with another seizure of about 10 kg heroin, Jiwal said. But while the security personnel were doing their rounds, Suresh reportedly stole a metre-long nylon tape from the office, tied it to his shirt, and hung himself from the iron grill of a door, Jiwal said.

A security guard saw Suresh’s body and alerted NCB officials. He was rushed to the Royapettah Government Hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. After post-mortem, the body was handed over to one of his friends.
