
The Sri Lankan Chief of Defence Staff and commander of the Sri Lankan Army will visit Jammu and Kashmir and fly over the Line of Control for first-hand experience of the security situation in the region.
Lt. Gen. L.P. Balagalle, who is slated to arrive in New Delhi on Sunday, will be the first foreign military chief to visit J-K after India and Pakistan announced a ceasefire. He will leave for Srinagar on Monday.
South Block sources said India will give an update on the security scenario in the region at the Srinagar-based 15 Corps HQ, where Balagalle will be received by Lt. Gen. Nirbhay Sharma. In a first-time move, the Army intends to give Balagalle an aerial tour of the LoC in Kupwara to familiarise him with the infiltration. routes.
Balagalle will also visit Kupwara where he will be briefed by officials of the 28 Division on the internal security situation in the Valley. On his return from J-K, Balagalle will meet Defence Minister George Fernandes and the three service chiefs to discuss the regional security situation.
