Landslides, continuing for the ninth consecutive day, have hit new areas in Uttarkashi’s Garhwal town today, forcing the displaced population to hold special prayers and yagnas to ward off the natural calamity.
The town , situated in the foothills of the Varunavrat mountains on the banks of River Bhagirathi, faced its worst crisis after the devastating earthquake of 1991.
The landslides have damaged many buildings, including several hotels, and the latest under threat is the District Collector’s office.
A week ago, landslides damaged many buildings on the Gangotri Highway. Three days ago, a second landslide hit many localities of the town. A third landslide that struck today affected areas like Masjid Mohalla, Udyan Mohalla and the Collector’s office.
Meanwhile, over 4,000 people have been evacuated to safer places. Patients in the district hospital have been moved to a building in Tiloth area of Uttarkashi, while the Collectorate is being shifted to another building. Chief Secretary R.S.Toliya visited the town yesterday and asked the district administration to cancel all leaves of the government staff.
