‘‘You, why are you standing here. Go stand there,’’ yelled RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav into a cordless microphone. Leaving nothing to chance, he paced from one pandal to the other; scolding, screaming and beseeching the crowd to clear the path for Bollywood stars and VVIPs.

This was Laloo’s main role at his daughter Rohini Acharya’s wedding. From 6 pm to late in the night, Laloo kept the crowds from scampering all over the place.

Thousands came today for the fairytale wedding of Rohini Acharya to Samresh Singh. Party-workers and supporters started pouring in from 5 pm, jostling with each other to catch a glimpse of the VIPs.

Over 300 police personnel, including Bihar Military Police and policewomen from the special branch, were deployed to manage the crowd and lead people into their allotted pandals. But all of them were warned to keep their hands off the food.

Union Minister Sharad Yadav was among the first VVIPs to reach the venue. Union Railways Minister Nitish Kumar and Samajwadi party general secretary Amar Singh had also dropped in.

Later in the evening, Chief Minister Rabri Devi also joined her husband in a bid to control the restive crowd. Over 45 people came by the special flight from Delhi. Najma Heptullah, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi, AICC Bihar in-charge Oscar Fernandes, Maharastra Deputy Chief Minister Chaggan Bhujbal were some of the political bigwigs present.

Among the stars, Sunil Shetty and Sharad Kapoor made an appearance. So did BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha. An Income Tax raid had followed Misa Bharti’s wedding because of the lavish gifts given to her, so this time, two gift counters were opened to receive presents and everyone was given receipts.
