Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav has said that a surprise check of freight trains ordered by him has revealed large-scale billing irregularities. The practice involves carrying more freight than is paid for, with the connivance of Railway officials. The checks were conducted simultaneously in all Railway zones on 27 September.
‘‘We seized more than 100 wagons for weight checking at different points in the country. After weighing 60 of them, most of which contain iron ore and coal more than 2,100 tonnes in excess of the declared weight have come to light. The weighing process is still on,’’ he said.
The Minister said one particular company — which was found carrying 696 tonnes in excess freight — was aided by a senior BJP leader. ‘‘I have solid proof against him and will talk to the Prime Minister on this matter,’’ Yadav said, refusing to divulge the name.
