Bangalore, Oct 4: Tamil Nadu paceman T Kumaran served notice of his potential with an outstanding display of fast medium bowling in the Irani Trophy tie at the KSCA Stadium on Monday.

The stocky bowler came back for a second spell after lunch and routed Karnataka for 91 to set up Rest of India’s innings and 60-run win with more than four sessions to spare.

Karnataka, the Ranji Trophy champions, put up a miserable batting display in both innings and only a top score of 27 by Javagal Srinath, batting at number nine, and his 31-run last wicket partnership ensured that the match dragged on till 30 minutes before tea.

After an unproductive first spell of six overs, Tamil Nadu paceman Kumaran returned after the lunch break to immediately make his mark. Kumaran, who had a bag of four wickets in the first essay, pitched the ball right up and got it to reverse swing into the batsman. The odd delivery that held its course and went straight through was even more lethal as A Vijay, who edged to the wicket-keeperfound out.

This morning, Rest, resuming at the overnight 298 for six, lost all the remaining four wickets in a trice to Srinath who returned figures of 6-77. His morning spell read 6.3-2-9-4 as Rest were dismissed for 321 — a lead of 151 runs. Sitanshu Kothak added just two runs to his overnight 116 while Harvinder Singh Sodhi increased his score of 50 by five runs.

Karnataka’s second innings got off to a poor start as Arunkumar fished outside the off-stump and was snared at third slip. Somasundar and A Vijay added 32 runs (the highest of the innings) for the second wicket before the former was caught behind. Just before the break, Thilak Naidu lead-edged an attempted flick off Harvinder and lobbed a catch to mid-on.
