MUMBAI, July 18: Krishna Sahu (Madhya Pradesh) clinched the gold medal in the 60 kg class of the Bombay Paints-sponsored West Zone senior powerlifting championships that got underway at the Andheri Stadium Sports Complex today.

Rahate, former junior national champion, relied on his strong points the squat to boost his tally. Shinde’s prowess at the dead lift held him in good stead.

The same lifters clinched the senior state title by the virtue of the same record with Shashikant Gajbhiye (Nagpur) lifting 505 kgs to finish third.

After the tournament was inaugurated by the deputy chief minister Gopinath Munde, competition in the state event produced winners in the 56 kg and 52 kg classes. Top honours went to Santosh Bandre (Suburban Mumbai) and Prakash Garje (Mumbai) respectively.

Running concurrently are the state senior championships which will select the Maharashtra squad to the national championships in Raipur in August.
