Punjab Revenue Minister Ajit Singh Kohar and his personal assistant Jarnail Singh were acquitted by a local court in the case of corruption and disproportionate assets. After the court appearance, Kohar told mediapersons that he was falsely booked in the case by the previous government. Interestingly, after the change of guard, the Vigilance Bureau, which had filed the case earlier, had submitted the cancellation report.

Notably, out of the total 18 accused, 16, including son of Kohar, Naib Singh, and his wife, were earlier discharged.

The VB had accused Kohar of possessing benami properties worth over Rs 20 crore, which was disproportionate to his known sources of income, and booked him on August 9, 2002, under various sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act. The case was registered by the then VB SSP Lok Nath Angra.

The VB had earlier alleged that Kohar had purchased properties in the name over dozen persons, who had agreed to become witnesses in the case. However, they turned hostile in the court and claimed that they were the real owners of the properties. Last year, the VB filed an application in the court for the cancellation of the case on the ground that it could not garner sufficient evidences. But Kohar and his PA were tried because the charges against them had been framed before the filing of the cancellation application.
