KARAD, Sept 17: Twenty-three students from a primary school in Yerwale near Karad fell sick after consuming castor oil seeds on September 15. After leaving school at 5.30 p.m., the children picked up castor oil seeds from the plant grown near the school and ate them. Immediately after that, they had bouts of vomiting and dysentery.

The children were still vomiting and when they reached home. The confused villagers approached the government primary health centre and doctor rushed to the homes of the children to check on their condition. He asked the villagers to move all 23 children to Krishna Hospital for treatment.

As news of the incident spread through Karad, the taluka tehsildar, Karpe visited the children’s homes to take stock of the situation. Villagers rushed to the school and uprooted the castor oil plants in the vicinity. The children are reportedly out of danger and recovering.
