Kidney perform various functions like urine formation, blood pressure regulation, glucose metabolism, and erythropoiesis (the process by which red blood cells are produced). The failure of the kidney function is termed as the renal failure which is of two types – acute and cronic.

Generally, humans can live with one kidney as well, as one has more functioning renal tissue than is needed to survive. Only when the amount of functioning kidney tissue is greatly diminished that stage five chronic kidney disease develops. Addressing the issue, a seminar and discussion was organised by Ajit Lahotii Charitable Foundation (ALCF).

The seminar also dealt with topics like the causes, treatment and support for kidney failure. Dr Anuradha Sohni, cancer specialist was the chief guest. The main speaker for the event was Dr Jagdish Hiremath, a welknown cardiologist. Also present on the occasion were Nephrologists Dr Tushar Dighe and Dr Abhay Sadre, who answered the queries of the audience.

Speaking about the event, head of ALCF and wife of late Ajit Lahoti, Nirmala Lahoti says, “Any disease not only affects the patient but also the entire family.” Ajit Lahoti, himself was a kidney patient and fought with the disease for 20 years. The kidney meet is a tribute to Ajit Lahoti on his death anniversary.

Speaking at the event Dr Anuradha Sohni says, “Be it cancer or kidney failure or any other disease, positive attitude is the best thing that will always help a patient. Adding to this Dr Jagdish Hiremath says, “The patient should try and find out everything about the disease like the diet and exercise to help themselves.” He adds, “patients should follow one path at a time and should not believe in anybody who claims to cure kidney failure through some old methods as it can be dangerous.”

Unlike acute renal failure, chronic renal failure slowly gets worse. It most often results from any disease that causes gradual loss of kidney function. It can range from mild dysfunction to severe kidney failure. Hence answereing a question about kidney transplant Dr Sadre recommended it as dialysis is a long and costly procedure.
