The Punjab government is planning to announce Anandpur Sahib as the 24th district of the state to mark the 350th martyrdom day of the ninth Sikh Guru Tegh Bahadur, The Indian Express has learnt.

State government sources indicate that if the decision is finalised, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led government will make the announcement during a special Assembly session scheduled for November 24, which also happens to be the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

If proclaimed, the proposed Anandpur Sahib district will be carved out of Ropar district and will cost the AAP-led state government at least Rs 500 crore to set up offices at the district headquarters and other facilities. Besides, the salary of officials and employees posted in the new district headquarters will cost the exchequer more than Rs 18 crore per month.
