GUWAHATI, JANUARY 9: The banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) received one of its biggest jolts in several years when police busted its central publicity office and arrested Chitra Dehengia, a senior official of the rebel outfit.

Dehengia was arrested in a midnight swoop between January 7 and 8 on a posh Shillong locality. They apprehended five top militants while busting the office, but one important leader managed to escape.

The ULFA has of late become heavily dependent on its publicity wing following the mounting of joint operation of army and police.

According to top official sources, the Shillong hideout used to control the entire publicity machinery of the ULFA, even maintaining websites besides publishing the weekly and monthly mouthpieces.
