LUSAKA, December 26: Former Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda has gone on hunger strike in the Kamwala remand prison since his arrest yesterday, his press aide Muhabi Lungu told a press conference.

Dr Kaunda, a vegetarian, has refused to eat food brought from his home, vowing he would only do so when the Government of President Frederick Chiluba furnishes him with reasons for his detention, Lungu said.

Dr Kaunda, who returned to Zambia last Monday after an almost two-month overseas trip, is being held under a 28-day police detention order.

Leaked information has allegedly linked Kaunda to the failed military coup plot on October 28.

The chairman of Kaunda’s United National Independence Party announced that it had pulled out of the inter-party talks between the Government and Opposition parties scheduled for January 10.
