Defending DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi’s remarks on Lord Ram, his daughter and DMK MP Kanimozhi said his comments were taken out of context, giving a chance to the ‘saffron brigade’ to come into limelight.

“Everybody knows my father has a good sense of humour and can be sarcastic when he talks about certain things. If you just quote it, it looks very different from what he meant,” she said.

Kanimozhi said it was time to put an end to this discussion adding that any faith that came in the way of development would be questioned.

“If other faiths come in the way, we will question that also. It’s just that it has not happened till now,” she said.

“The whole controversy is taking away the focus from the Sethusamudram project. It’s time to put an end to this discussion,” she said.

To a query if his comments were justified, Kanimozhi said, “Just for argument sake, people have questioned the ‘faith’ of non-believers and nobody has reacted violently. In Tamil Nadu, we have questioned and debated about religions, all of a sudden, you cannot take things out of context.”

“Inspite of all these discussions, religion has existed in the state. This is the way we have always been and we have a healthy atmosphere in the state,” she said.

“Periyar was an atheist but even religious leaders used to respect him.”

“Why should we change. Because questioning religion has brought about lot of positive changes in the state,” she said.
