A bomb apparently hidden in a motorcycle detonated in Karachi today in the parking lot of a state-oil company, killing one person and injuring at least seven, police said.
The explosion, which could be heard for kilometres, shattered glass and overturned motorcycles in the parking lot of the Pakistan state oil company, witnesses and police said. An office of an anti-terrorist police unit was also nearby, and the target of the blast was not immediately clear, authorities said.
Authorities were trying to determine if the person killed in the explosion was the driver of the motorcycle.
‘‘We are investigating and trying to determine who was behind this bomb explosion,’’ deputy police Chief Tariq Jamil said. ‘‘No group has yet claimed responsibility.’’ The explosion shattered windows at the state oil building and several other buildings nearby. Police, paramilitary units and Rangers rushed to the scene, setting up road blocks along surrounding streets.
