The vice-chancellor V-C of a Kanpur university, who had prevented Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from holding a meeting in the unversity premises, resigned on Tuesday. Governor T V Rajeswar has accepted his resignation.
V K Suri, the V-C of the Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology, had hit the headlines when he denied permission to Gandhi to hold the meeting in the university8217;s auditorium in October. He was scheduled to address the students of the university. At the last moment, Suri cancelled the meeting citing security reasons. The governor, apparently miffed over the treatment meted out to the Congress leader did not participate in the university8217;s convocation ceremony scheduled for the same evening. He was the chief guest.
The governor had sought explanation from Suri for not permitting Gandhi to address the students. The V-C, in his reply, had said the university authorities had not granted any formal permission to Gandhi to hold the meeting.
The Raj Bhawan had said Suri had cancelled Gandhi8217;s meeting under pressure from the UP government. The Mayawati government had denied the charge, saying the state had nothing to do with the matter as it was an issue between the university and the Congress. The governor has ordered the registrar of the university to assume charge till a new V-C is appointed.
