Kanchi case: Judge says he may pull out

A Madras High Court judge today came down heavily on the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Sankararaman murder case for its ‘‘fishing tactics’’ and said he was considering recusing himself from all cases relating to the Kanchi Mutt.

Justice K.P. Sivasubramaniam was hearing a writ petition, seeking the quashing of summons to S. Bhaskaran, a Chennai-based cardiologist attached to Sankara Nethralaya. The doctor had recently begun a ‘‘Campaign for Dharma’’ in a website, Kanchi-Sathya.org, asking devotees to donate generously for meeting the legal expenses of the Mutt. And that was enough for the SIT to summon him and seek an explanation.

A visibly irritated judge told the prosecution: ‘‘If you need any information from anyone on anything, you may as well go to the person concerned and enquire instead of summoning them…’’

Asking if the SIT was not engaged in a fishing expedition, the judge told the prosecution to ask their client to stick to the case, instead of digressing.

The matter was adjourned till March 22.
