After 22 years as president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC), Murli Deora finally handed over charge to new president Gurudas Kamat at a Congress rally here today.
Supervised by the All India Congress Committee general secretary incharge of Maharashtra affairs, Vayalar Ravi, and Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Ghulam Nabi Azad, Kamat spelt out his agenda to strengthen the eroding base of the party in Mumbai district.
In their zeal to welcome the new president and be on the right side of the party high command, all banners mentioning Deora were hastily replaced with those of Kamat. The bouquets weren’t many in number and those bearing them came predominantly from the eastern suburbs which is Kamat’s constituency.
Corporators owing loyalities to Deora seemed unsure of their move and were clustered together waiting for Kamat’s arrival.
Ironically, they never had reason to build bridges with any other MRCC leader as few believed that Deora would be replaced.
Sycophancy has largely dictated Congress policies, it now depends on Kamat to break out of the mould and restructure the MRCC.
