PUNE, NOV 8: Transcending the language barrier film star Kamal Hasan spoke through the language of the arts as he paid his tribute to noted humorist P L Deshpande at the concluding function of Pulotsav on Monday evening.

A galaxy of artists and intellectuals gather to pay their respects with Pandit Bhimsen Joshi’s reneditions bringing down the curtain on a year’s celebration of Pu La stepping into the eighties. For Hasan, it was a emotional moment as he recounted that his connection with Pu La went back to times before his birth.

“My elder brother who is my guru, was a student of Pu La and by that right I am related to him. Although I cannot speak the language, I am touched at the affection and the tribute you have paid Pu La.”

However Hasan lamented the fact that cinema in Mahrashtra was gasping for breath. “Despite Tamil Nadu being a much smaller state than Maharsahtra we have a thriving industry that produces almost 120 films a year.” The Hindi film industry, he said, had almost gobbled up the Marathi film industry which was unwelcome.
