With Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is unable to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Governments Meeting (CHOGM) to be held in Malta from November 25-27, Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath departed for Malta tonight to represent India at the important meeting.
The CHOGM is held once in two years at the level of Heads of Government (Prime Ministers/Presidents). Dr Singh was originally scheduled to attend, but can’t go since Parliament’s winter session has begun today. The special theme of this CHOGM meet is “Networking the Commonwealth for Development”.
Apart from making a statement at the executive session of CHOGM on November 25, Nath is also expected to call on the Queen and have a meeting with Prime Minister Tony Blair.
The agenda for the meeting will include a review of global developments in the context of Commonwealth’s fundamental values and outcomes of the UN 2005 Summit in terms of Millennium Development Goal (MDG).
Issues related to sustainable development, gender, human rights, democracy, migration, terrorism, human rights and climate change will be discussed at the meet.
