.

Shiv Sena corporator and standing committee member Vaman Mhatre’s graft charge against the standing committee and civic secretary C S Mane and his subsequent disappearance without trace has set the rumour mills off. The theories get more bizarre with every passing day. The latest one is that Sena chief Bal Thackeray called Mhatre to Matoshri for a dressing down over the beating the party’s image has taken over the happenings in the KDMC for the last few weeks. He is learnt to have cracked the whip demanding Mhatre’s resignation. Interestingly, the letter to the chief minister where Mhatre implicated the others has reportedly been written in blood. The otherwise only-too-glad-to-be-in-the-news Sena brigade is however not telling. Watch this space.

More raids

Coming close on the heels of the Vaman Mhatre episode, the Anti Corruption Bureau raids on the civic commissioner’s P A Jaywant Mhatre and executive engineer Sunil Joshi has led to the Congresswallahs climbing on high moral ground about the episode, even while clucking in sympathy whenever the subject is broached.

The flurry of activity in the BJP camp immediately after the raid and the meaningful glances between Congresswallahs as first Bharati Mhatre (Jaywant Mhatre’s sister) and then Harishchandra Patil got up to leave the house hurriedly when the general body meeting was on was telling. When approached for her comments on the Vaman Mhatre episode, KDMC mayor Sharayu Pradhan, not exactly known for being articulate, refused to say anything, saying it would be best to speak to party higher-ups (read `Balasaheb’ and Anand Dighe).

Still the boss…

After being the recipient of some very enthusiastically arranged farewells, one would have thought ex-municipal commissioner Prithviraj Bayas was through with the KDMC and its perquisites. He was down from Pune enroute to Mumbai, where he felt it necessary to go back to the comforts of his Klaxon-fitted official car (MH-054004).

Phoolan’s visit

Almost a month after Samajwadi Party MP Phoolan Devi visited Dombivli, residents are linking a vehicle of the UP government which timed its visit to Kalyan on the same day with the dacoit-turned-politician.

The light blue coloured jeep (MGR 8234) has been parked across the Gurudev Hotel in Kalyan for over a month, setting off residents’ tongues wagging.
