A slew of science, technology and trade agreements are likely to be signed during President A P J Abdul Kalam’s visit to Singapore, Philippines and South Korea.

The nine-day tour begins tomorrow. It marks the first time that an Indian President is visiting South Korea. Kalam will be accompanied by Union minister Raghuvansh Pratap Singh and three MPs, including Sachin Pilot and will meet science, technology and education experts.

The President will visit educational and technology institutions and interact with students and faculty of centres of technology.

Kalam will meet heads of the three countries and focus on national developmental goals. His delegation will also focus on inputs for rural and industrial development. Secretary (East) Rajiv Sekri said here today that Kalam and his delegation will be in Singapore from January 31 to February 3 and proceed to Philippines where they will be until February 6. The last three days of the trip will be spent in South Korea.

Singapore is an important partner for India and Kalam’s visit reflects the growing partnership between the two countries. A comprehensive economic agreement is expected to be signed during the visit. During the Philippines leg of the trip, the delegation will look to closely cooperate with the IT sector there. Kalam will address the National Assembly there. Kalam and his colleagues are likely to explore the possibility of stepping up the already strong trade ties with South Korea, which is the fifth-largest investor in India.
