President-elect Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said here on Wednesday “golden India can be created if science and spirituality go together” while addressing students at his alma mater St Joseph’s College.

Citing the example of how India’s pioneering nuclear scientist Vikram Sarabhai had approached Bishop Peter Periera for possession of land for setting up the Thumba Space Station in Kerala in 1962, Dr Kalam said it was fusion of minds between Sarabhai and Periera which had ultimately resulted in the land on which a church and numerous fishing habitations were located being handed over to the scientist for space development.

During a sudden dip of volume in the loudspeakers, he said: ‘‘Can you hear me? Testing 1, 2, 3, 4 – 4, 3, 2, 1’’, provoking laughter among the audience.
