VIENNA, OCT 12: Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the Russian star chasing the top spot in the world rankings, beat Sweden8217;s Thomas Enqvist 6-3, 6-4 in the first round of the CA Trophy.

Kafelnikov, second in the world behind Andre Agassi, advanced to a second-match against Jan Siemerink of The Netherlands. Siemerink beat France8217;s Arnaud Clement 5-7, 7-6 7-5, 7-6 8-6.

Earlier, Rusedski beat Sweden8217;s Thomas Johansson 4-6,6-3, 7-6 7-3.

In the first match of the tournament, 18-year-old Swiss Roger Federer, playing on the strength of a wild card, took only 59 minutes to subdue American Vince Spadea 6-4, 6-2.

Panova sets up clash with Hingis

ZURICH: Russian qualifier Tatiana Panova set-up a second round meeting with top seed Martina Hingis at the 1.05 million WTA event here yesterday. The 23-year-old from Moscow upset her Russian Fed Cup teammate, Elena Likhovtseva, 6-3, 7-5 in the first round.

On a good day for the qualifiers, Spain8217;s Magui Serna defeated Ruxandra Dragomir, of Romania 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, while American Corina Morariu defeated another Russian, Elena Dementieva 6-2, 6-2.

Patty Schnyder ensured there would be two Swiss players in the second round, after coming back from a set down to defeat the experienced American Amy Frazier 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
