Myanmar’s military Junta pledged its commitment on Thursday to a much-criticised ‘‘roadmap to democracy’’ despite this week’s purge of the plan’s promoter, Prime Minister Khin Nyunt.
In a briefing to foreign diplomats, officials also said that Khin Nyunt, seen as a relatively tractable reformist within the military administration, had been involved in major corruption even though he was officially retired on health grounds.
‘‘Foreign Minister U Nyan Win told us at a briefing that although the former Prime Minister was permitted to retire for health reasons, he was responsible for a big corruption case recently,’’ a Yangon-based Asian diplomat said.
It was unclear whether Khin Nyunt, who was also military intelligence chief, would be facing trial. It was the first time the secretive regime talked about Khin Nyunt since his removal. —Reuters
