MYSORE, June 22: June, when the south-west monsoon peaks in Karnataka, bringing with it the threat of floods, is a cruel month, as far as the Ranganathittu bird sanctuary in Karnataka concerned. Twice in this decade–in 1991 and again in 1994–flood waters of the Cauvery washed away thousands of eggs and chicks. This year, the Painted Storks and Spoonbills have already left with their chicks, while the White Ibises are due to arrive only in July. With the reopening of educational institutions, the tourist season has also come to an end. However, plans are afoot to make the sanctuary more attractive to tourists.
