CHANDIGARH, Sept 30: Six youngsters, accused of throwing stones at each other, besides battling with batons and brandishing swords during a group clash opposite the Sector 17 District Courts Complex, were remanded to judicial custody till October 14 by UT Chief Judicial Magistrate Sant Parkash today.

The accused include, Mewa Singh, Balwinder Singh and Karamjit Singh from one side and Harjit Singh, Sajjan Singh and Amarpreet Singh from the other. Taking up their bail applications, the CJM issued notice to the State for tomorrow.

The six — "supporters" of murdered Roopnagar MLA Bachittar Singh, besides the accused in the case — had reportedly gathered at the district courts while the trial was on.

According to the police, they were booked for rioting armed with deadly weapons, for voluntarily causing hurt, mischief, besides criminal intimidation after the clash. The brawl, which occurred around 3.30 pm, yesterday had lasted for less than 10 minutes. Eyewitnesses said the rival groups, as many as 15 to 20 persons on each side, hurled abuses and later threw stones at each other. Though denied by the police, eyewitnesses asserted that swords were also brandished.
