PUNE, June 30: The source of happiness is within us where it can be reached. The soul animates us. Due to the soul, we live. Our mind is filled with thoughts that are constantly changing. Due to this state of agitation, the soul is `hidden’ and we do not experience happiness. But whenever the mind stops, or is intently focused on one thought, the soul is `uncovered’ and happiness is achieved. Mostly an external object will do this but won’t it be better if we reduce our dependence on external things to achieve happiness. So how do you become independent? Only by silencing the mind. Sublime and annihilate the ego.
So cut off, “I-you, us-them, good-bad, rich-poor, past-future, pleasure-pain, love-hate.”
We become what we think. Just as we think of someone we love dearly and whose association we desire. Selfless love, devotion, faith and intensity can be the emotions in our mind. Admire the creator hidden in his creation.
We can continuously think and meditate on a line from prayers and since prayers are always true and correct they can act as a reference.
The more you meditate, more moments of God-centred behaviour will arise and happiness can be achieved. And of course the ultimate goal is to be continuously meditating.
Live honestly in your thoughts, words and deeds. It includes every activity such as studying, playing, bringing up kids, cooking, eating and earning one’s livelihood.
An act performed honestly will keep us free from guilt and this is an important support to the mind to be able to meditate effectively.
Honesty also means to focus on the activity or role we are playing. At work, concentrate on the job. At home think about home-related issues. Since we can play only one role, we should abide by its rules. This requires great adaptability and alertness. Generally the opposite happens. For example, a general manager behaves with his wife as if she is his employee. Role clarity can minimise many problems.
So aim to keep your mind and body involved in the same activity. And finally share willingly with the needy without expecting any reward.
