Union HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi said here today that India had no reason to feel ashamed of its human rights record post-Gujarat as the international community, which was making noises, had a far worse record.

“They should look at their own human rights record…In America, they treat Blacks in a far worse manner. The only difference is that they try to conceal their deeds while we do not hide what we do,” he said.

Joshi was here to lay the foundation stone of a women?s hostel at the Kendriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth.

The Minister blamed the media for what he called its ‘‘misinformation” and said: ‘‘You should read the Gujarat papers to know what is happening in Gujarat.’’ He attributed the violence to ‘‘certain outside” interests. “There is so much arms, drugs and ammunition being smuggled by a country which shares a border with the two. There should be an inquiry to ascertain the causes of the violence.’’
