SURAT, OCT 26: In a series of upsets, IWM Anupama Gokhale of Petroleum Sports Control Board (PSCB), IM Mithrakant of Tamil Nadu and world amateur champion Viraf Avari of Gujarat suffered defeats on the third round of the 36th National B Chess Championship here today.

Arjuna awardee Anupama lost to Manish Joshi of Railways while Mithrakant was stunned by Manoj Panigrahi of Orissa. Avari lost to Atanu Lahiri of LIC.However, other International Masters like Tejas Bakre of Gujarat, Lanka Ravi, Vishal Sarin of LIC and Sharad Tilak of Maharashtra drew with Pradip Ghosh of West Bengal, S Khandelkar of Maharashtra, L Chaterjee of West Bengal and Nirav Rajasubba of Gujarat respectively.

IM Ravi Hegde of Banks Sport Board (BSB), IM RB Ramesh of Tamil Nadu, IM Sudhakar Babu of Karnataka, IM DK Sharma and Ponnuswamy Konguvel of PSCB beat Bal Subramaniam of Tamil Nadu, GB Joshi of Indian Airlines, J Ramkrishna, Anjali Pande of Maharashtra and Chinghel Singh respectively.
