Investigations into the kidnapping of Roma Jhawar took a new turn today when the police revealed that the alleged kingpin of the case, Arvind, was killed around midnight on February 4, the day the incident took place.
Roma was kidnapped at gunpoint on the morning of February 4 while she was on her way to college. She, however, returned the next morning after a ransom of around Rs 20 lakh was allegedly paid by her family.
West Bengal Police were on the lookout for Arvind and three other members of his gang, Pappu, Mukesh and Kallu, who are still at large. Ten people, including Gunjan, one of the key members of the gang and his parents, have already been arrested and a ransom amount of over Rs 20 lakh was recovered from them.
According to Rajiv Kumar, DIG CID (Operations), Arvind was shot dead by other members of the gang the same night following an argument over sharing of the ransom amount.
Investigations revealed that Arvind’s body was disposed of at Paroma Island near Science City in such a way that it would give the impression he was the victim of a hit-and-run case. Salt Lake police later took the body to the National Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem.
‘‘Most of the gang members are from Kadapara area. There was a strong rumour in the area today that Arvind was killed by the gang members. Some of the residents called us and we found that a body was recovered from Salt Lake around midnight on February 4, the day of the kidnapping. We went to the hospital immediately and Arvind’s photograph and the body matched’’.
Gunjan later confessed to CID officials that Pappu shot Arvind with his revolver following a row over sharing of the booty.
