NEW DELHI, July 13: India’s Jeev Milkha Singh left himself a huge mountain to climb in the second and final round of The Open Championships qualifying tomorrow after a disastrous triple bogey on the 14th hole of West Lancashire Golf Club in the north west of England. Jeev finished with a three over par 75, six shots off the lead. Five other players managed to shoot beneath the card with a further 33 still to finish their rounds, according to information received here.

Jeev, the only Indian playing on the PGA European Tour, was sitting comfortably at one over par before his tee-shot found the tall rough on the 14th. Though the Indian did well to make amends with a birdie at the last, his misfortune on the 14th put a cruel dent in his hopes of qualifying for The Open Championship after four previous attempts.

Two under after five holes, Jeev dropped his first shot of the day at the seventh, but still reached the turn with a one under 35. The 26-year-old made consecutive bogeys at 10 and 11 to go one over, before his triple at the 14th and birdie at the 18th.

While Jeev still has a slim chance of following in the footsteps of Gaurav Ghei, who last year became the first Indian to play an Open championship, it looks unlikely the other Indian players in the party will tread the fairways of Royal Birkdale this year.

Arjun Singh carded a five over 77 on the same layout as his more successful namesake, while Vivek Bhandari also fired a 77, but over the par 71. Arjun Atwal fared no better, returning a seven over 79 while Jyoti Randhawa and Ghei are even further off the pace after each posetd 82.

Kwatra Finishes 24th: India’s Shivin Kwatra brought in a over par 76 to finish 24th (along with South African junior champion Schuttie Vincent) at a four-day score of 294 (74 + 72 + 72 + 76) on the final day of the 31st Junior World Golf Championships in San Diego. It was one stroke more than the Indian’s own record, established in 1996.
