COLOMBO, July 22: Sri Lanka scored their third straight win when they expectedly outclassed Bangladesh by 103 runs in their final league match of the Pepsi Asia Cup at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground, here, today.
The two days of rain on Sunday and Monday had made the underfoot conditions quite soft and it was quite an achievement that only four overs a side was lost to make it a 46 overs-an-innings affair.
Sanath Jayasuriya led a blistering assault in the morning while putting on a record 171 runs for the opening wicket. The partnership provided a fine base as Lanka rattled up 296 in their 46 overs.
Bangladesh were never really in the hunt against an asking rate of 6.43 at the start of the innings. It was a typical effort from Jayasuriya. He plundered runs at will, hitting ten boundaries in his 44-ball half-century.
But it was from 50 to his fifth one-day international century that he was in his elements. He launched a murderous attack on Bangladesh skipper Akram Khan, hammering him for 6, 6, 4, 4, 6 in an over which cost the bowler 27 runs in all. Jayasuriya took just 28 balls to attain his second half-century. When he was finally out at 171, he had scored 108.
