AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa has urged the Centre and state Governments to set up a sports training institute in Kanyakumari district as planned.

The Sports Authority of India had sanctioned a training institute in Tamil Nadu in 2001 and the AIADMK Government allotted 52 acres near Rajakkamangalam in Kanyakumari district, Jayalalithaa said in a statement.

The Centre, subsequently, had allotted Rs 1 crore as subsidy, she added. The institute, for which the foundation stone was laid in 2004, was to give training in sports and games—including swimming, football, fencing, gymnastics among others—to sportspersons from Tamil Nadu and Kerala, she said.

After the DMK Government came to power, the project was dumped due to political reasons, Jayalalithaa said.

The AIADMK chief added that if the present Government failed to take steps for setting up the sports training institute, the Centre might sanction the project for some other state.
