CHANDIGARH, Aug 1: Till Tuesday morning, Sunny Kaul, a Class X student of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Sector 31, was a happy-go-lucky teenager. But his decision to practice javelin throw in the school playground that evening proved fatal.

Sunny (15) was hit on the right side of his abdomen when a javelin thrown by a student during the practice session accidentally pierced his body. The javelin cut through his ribs, rupturing his arteries, leading to profuse bleeding.

The boy was rushed to the emergency wing of the Government Medical College Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries late in the evening. Too much blood had already been lost and doctors were unable to stop the bleeding. The body was cremated on Thursday and a condolence meet was organised in the school.

Sunny’s parents are finding it hard to come to terms with the sudden tragedy. “If I knew that this was in store for him, I wouldn’t have sent him to school,” lamented the distraught mother, a teacher in Sai Niketan School.

She said that when her daughter Amrita, a Class VII student of the same school, called her up to inform that Sunny had been hurt while playing, she didn’t imagine it was so serious. It was only when she reached the hospital that she realised how critical her son’s condition was.

She also blamed the school authorities for the delay on their part in rushing him to the hospital. The bereaved parents have urged the school authorities to take requisite steps to ensure safety of students. As for them, their loss cannot be compensated.yy
