New Delhi, April 19: Jaspal Rana's gold in the 25-metre rapid fire pistol was the perfect icing on the cake as curtains came down on the nine-day 41st National Shooting Championship at the Dr Karni Singh Stadium here today.For Rana, it was the fourth gold of the championship. Armymen Bhanwar Lal Dhaka and Ajab Rao claimed the silver and bronze. They also helped their team win the gold.The armymen stole the show on the day, making a clean sweep of the medals in Free Rifle 3 position as TC Pallangappa clinched the gold, scoring 1233, with a national record. Ashok Kumar Shahi and Charan Singh finished in that order for the silver and bronze, apart from claiming the team gold.Pallangappa's latest mark erased his own mark of 1231.40, which he set at the Coimbatore nationals in 1995.Harinder Singh, however, won the gold edging out Rao Inderjit Singh of Haryana by a solitary point. Harinder, who scored 136 to win the title here, holds the record of 141. Saravdeep Mann got the bronze at 131.TEAMSFOR WORLD CUP: The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has recommended a 23-member team for clearance by the Department of Sports for the forthcoming Grand Prix Shooting in Fort Benning and the subsequent World Cup in Atlanta.The NRAI has sent the list to the Teams Wing of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and is awaiting word from the SAI. But ASV Prasad, executive director (Teams), was reportedly on leave. He is expected to resume duty tomorrow and SAI sources informed that as soon as he comes, the list will be forwarded to the Sports Ministry.Meanwhile, the two-member team of Masher Singh and Harinder Singh Bedi will participate in UIT World Cup Championship in Brunei before joining the team at Atlanta for the World Cup beginning May 11.Ashok Pandit and Ved Prakash, who are part of the team recommended, will take part only in the GP event and will not be a party to the World Cup which follows.
