Infighting within the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind, one of the oldest and largest Muslim organisations in the country, took a decisive turn on Saturday with the Central Managing Committee (CMC) of the Jamiat expelling its former president Maulana Arshad Madani from its primary membership citing grounds of “anti-organisation activities”.
The organisation dating back to the pre-Independence era has been marred by continuous internal rivalry, which became public when Maulana Mahmood Madani, its general secretary, came out in the open against president Arshad Madani, who was later expelled by a working committee meeting of the Jamiat on March 6. Arshad Madani, in turn, had formed a Jamiat Executive Committee, claiming it to be the real Jamiat. The March 6 decision of the working committee was endorsed here on Saturday.
The expulsion of Arshad Madani came at a time when various Muslim organisations were trying desperately to sort out the tussle between Mahmood Madani, a Rajya Sabha MP from the Rashtriya Lok Dal, and his uncle Arshad Madani. The CMC also passed a resolution at the meeting condemning Arshad Madani for forming a parallel Jamiat and divested him and all those included in the parallel body from the primary membership of the organisation.
The highest-decision making body of the Jamiat appointed Maulana Sayed Mohammed Usman Mansoori, deputy administrator Darul Uloom Deoband, as interim president.
“Maulana Arshad Madani was involved in anti-Jamiat activities. He had dissolved elected units and disintegrated its democratic structure to establish his personal rule,” said the CMC in a resolution. According to the resolution, the Jamiat is governed by a constitution which authorises the executive and the managing committee to take any decision in the interest of the body.
The CMC meeting also passed several resolutions on terrorism, reservation for Muslims, prevention of communal riots and Dalit-Muslim unity. The committee also passed a resolution against Israeli aggression in Palestine.
