MUMBAI NOVEMBER 17: Outstation juniors stole a march on their counterparts from Mumbai in the semi-finals of the Rs 4,50,000 prize money 25th HSBC Maharashtra State Open Squash Championships at the Bombay Gymkhana’s glass-backed courts on Friday. While Delhi’s Abhimanyu Jain recorded the biggest upset of the tournament, knocking out top seed Vishal Kapoor in the boys under-19 semi-finals, another Delhi lad Gaurav Nandrajog and Calcutta’s Saurav Ghoshal put themselves in line for double glory. In the final, Jain will take on third seed Nandrajog, who had an easy outing against Varun Kataruka, winning 9-0, 9-5, 9-2. Nandrajog, the top seed in the under-17 also made that final, beating Sahil Vora in four games. He will meet Saurav Ghoshal, who beat Supreet Singh 6-9, 9-5, 9-6, 9-0. In the open event, Manish Chotrani and second seed Navneet Narain of Services booked their place in the final with contrasting victories.

While Chotrani won in straight games over Capt Anuj Kalia of Services, a match prolonged with frequent appeals to the referee, Capt Narain played a tactically superior match to defeat third seed and under-19 National champion Bikram Uberoi in five games. The first game between Kalia and Chotrani lasted a marathon 27 minutes, with Kalia time and again causing stoppages and arguing with the referee.
