The confidence was always there. 1,245 runs in six Ranji Trophy matches had helped it grow. All it took was a little fine-tuning from former England captain and commentator Geoffery Boycott to help India A cricketer Dheeraj Jadhav start his Zimbabwe tour with a solid 96.

Jadhav — known for his ability to stay at the crease for long — drew upon all that Boycott has taught him in his knock in the four-day game against Zimbabwe XI at Harare on Thursday.

Boycott had spoken to Jadhav during the camp in Bangalore before the India ‘A’ team left for Zimbabwe. ‘‘He had told me a thing or two on how to handle spinners more efficiently and that is something I am working on,’’ Jadhav tells The Indian Express.

Boycott had singled out Jadhav’s defence and patience as his strong points but asked him to improve his game against spinners. ‘‘Boycott’s suggestions have been really helpful,’’ Jadhav says. ‘‘This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase my ability and I’ll try my best to make the most of it.’’
