The high-powered three-member committee probing the illegal constructions in the high profile green belt area around the Dal lake in J-K is expected to submit its report in a week’s time.

J-K Urban and Housing minister Ghulam Hassan Mir, on December 2, had ordered a high-level inquiry into the constructions that included the official residences of former chief minister Farooq Abdullah and DGP A K Suri, guest house of Jammu and Kashmir Bank, 35 government and private buildings and had asked for furnishing of report within two months.

Most of these constructions have come up without prior permission from the authorities. The three-member panel headed by Kashmir’s divisional commissioner Parvez Diwan is in the final stages of compiling the report and are likely to submit it weeks before the set deadline. Sources said the panel brushing aside political pressure, engaged four sub-committees to expedite the investigations.

M.S. Rather, Additional Divisional Commissioner, who is on the panel, said the members of the sub-committees went door-to-door to verify the ‘‘genuineness’’ of the constructions. ‘‘We are on the job and will submit the report in a few days,’’ Rather told the Indian Express.

Preliminary reports indicate more than 100 constructions have come up illegally in the belt. The state government had frozen constructions in and around the lake in 1978-79 under the ‘Save Dal’ programme.
