Around 30 women activists of the Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena (BVS)—the students’ wing of the Shiv Sena —on Wednesday roughed up Professor Kiran Gimonkar of Sir J J School of Art, when he was taking a class.

The BVS activists then paraded Gimonkar — who is a professor in the metal crafts department at the institute — across the campus; his clothes were torn and face blackened, the police said.

BVS president Abhijit Panse, said: “We received complaints from students that the professor, besides harassing female students, used abusive language and practised favouritism among female students.”

Panse added: “This (the attack) was to indicate that the professor should be suspended and if necessary action is not taken, we will protest further and the next step will be of a sterner nature,” added Panse.

Professor Gimonkar, who was injured, was taken to the J J Hospital. In a complaint to the police, Gimonkar has accused 30 women of roughing him up and named two of them. PD Khanvilkar, senior police inspector of Azad Maidan police station, said: “We are verifying the allegations and investigating the case. No one has been arrested.”
