Eighteen hours after he was admitted to Lilavati Hospital here, doctors said Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan was fine.

After conducting several tests, they confirmed what their counterparts in Delhi had suspected: the 63-year-old actor was suffering from colitis (inflammation of the large intestine).

‘‘Mr Bachchan has been advised rest and medication. The decision to discharge him will be taken tomorrow morning,’’ said administration officer Vaishali Rajbara, on behalf of Dr Narendra Trivedi, the medical director of the hospital.

‘‘You can get colitis through bacteria, virus or amoebiasis, which get into your system when you have contaminated food or water,’’ said Dr Rajesh Sainani, a gastroenterologist at L H Hiranandani Hospital. ‘‘It’s not serious and can be cured by medication.’’

Bachchan and his family were in Lucknow on Sunday for a function to commemorate the birth anniversary of his deceased father, Harivanshrai Bachchan, when he first complained of pain. He was admitted to Escorts Hospital, Delhi, from where he was airlifted to Mumbai.

As news of Bachchan’s hospitalisation spread, a stream of celebrities trooped into the Bandra hospital. Anxious fans also gathered outside to catch a glimpse of their favourite stars and to get the latest on Big B’s health.

Apart from Bollywood personalities—Yash Chopra, Ramesh Sippy, Sujit Kumar, Gauri Khan, Arjun Rampal, Mehr Jessia, Suniel Shetty, music director Anandji, politicians like Chhagan Bhujbal too visited him. Bachchan’s younger brother Ajitabh also spent the day at the hospital. ‘‘I met him. He’s absolutely fine and is just resting. It’s nothing major at all,’’ said Chopra.

‘‘He is doing fine and should be discharged soon,’’ said music director Bappi Lahiri. ‘‘This is because of his hectic schedule,’’ said director Mehul Kumar, adding, ‘‘He will be discharged in a couple of days.’’
