Italian defence shows chinks in the armour

Olsen’s side have gone a long way with this ploy and it is easy to see the logic of using it, especially when you have an excellent target man such as Tore Andre Flo. It was a typical performance from Cesare Maldini’s side as they hit Norway on the break and then soaked up the pressure in the second half. They have become the first team to reach the quarter-finals. But I am still not convinced this Italian side is goodenough.

In previous years the Azzurri were masters of hanging on to a one goal lead but although they managed it against Norway, I still have my doubts about the quality of their defence. They conceded a lot of ground in the second half and were really living on their nerves in the final few minutes. The alarm bells started ringing when they called veteran Giuseppe Bergomi back into the team after years in the international wilderness.

The cover looks pretty thin now and as a consequence Italy are looking a little vulnerable at the back. Looking ahead, Holland have a huge test against an exciting Yugoslavian side and it should be a game all neutrals will enjoy. Germany are an aging side and it remains to be seen whether they can last the pace. It is difficult to judge how good Berti Vogts’ side is because they tend to cruise in the opening games and do just enough to win.

Mexico should give them their toughest test yet. They will be delighted to have made it through the last 16 after their wonderfulfightback against Holland.
