When Greg Chappell, in his presentation to the BCCI, named Ambati Rayudu as ‘‘young potential… to keep India’s batting world-class into the immediate future’’, the Andhra batsman was trying hard to get his rhythm right.

After three impressive years of domestic cricket, Rayudu (19) is now struggling to pull himself back after an ‘‘average’’ 2004-05 season. Once touted as the GenNext batsman and included in the probables list for the Test series against New Zealand in 2002, Rayudu was also a part of the seniors team along with Sourav Ganguly in the Challenger’s Trophy.

Yet his omission from the list of 36 probables announced by the BCCI yesterday hasn’t bothered him.

‘‘It was expected. I’ve not had a great time with the bat and so there wasn’t any disappointment on not being called. But I am keen on correcting all those things that had been going wrong and want to get back to scoring some runs,’’ Rayudu told The Indian Express today.

The youngster had impressed both Chappell and former India coach John Wright with his gutsy batting. ‘‘That was very encouraging but what’s troubling me at the moment is the fact that I’ve not able to give my best,’’ Rayudu said.
