Mangalore, Sept 2: The recent unauthorised calls made to foreign countries, especially Dubai and Karachi — by three persons, two from Uppinangady exchange — has brought to the fore suspicions of ISI presence in the area.
Khader, Ashraf and Dharanappa were caught red-handed by the officers of the telecom department and were later remanded to judicial custody. According to official sources, these calls were being made from quite some time ago, causing losses to the telecom department of lakhs of rupees.
Officers from the Central Intelligence Bureau are reported to be visiting certain localities in Puttur taluk to investigate the matter.
Reportedly, the facts uncovered are leading to a suspicion that certain rural areas in Puttur taluk, which is adjacent to Kasaragod (Kerala), have become hideouts for ISI agents.
It is also suspected that fundamentalist organisations which have already fomented civil unrest in Kerala have made Puttur taluk their next target. The Puttur police also feel that suchelements may try to destroy the social fabric of Puttur taluk by instigating communal disturbances.
A youth organisation in Puttur had, three months ago, reportedly submitted a memorandum to the Union Home Minister supplying details about suspected ISI activities in the taluk.
