The much-publicised proposed wedding between British film star Liz Hurley and her lover Arun Nayar has become a non-starter and it is off, a leading London tabloid claimed today. The News Of The World in a front page report said, 37-year old Nayar called off his wedding with Liz, 38, as he got cold feet after rows over her expensive lifestyle.

According to the tabloid, his finances took a severe dent in July when he had to pay his Italian model wife Valentina Pedroni an estimated £625,000 divorce settlement. At the same time the tabloid quoted a spokeswoman for Liz saying ‘‘Liz and Arun are still happy together’’. Arun reportedly told his friends he hated being treated as a ‘‘kept man’’.

He spends most of his time away caring for Liz’s toddler son, Damien. Liz is devastated, the report said. Arun has been left counting the pennies, the report said. Ashamed at being unable to keep up with her jet-set lifestyle, Arun has now told Liz the February wedding she had longed for is off, the largely circulated tabloid said. Arun will eventually inherit a fortune from his family textile empire. But at the moment he can’t compete with his lover on either the income or status stakes.

Liz rakes in £2 million a year from her estee lauder contract alone. She also gets a wage from production company Simian Films. Things finally came to a head between Arun and Liz when the couple visited his hometown Mumbai a month ago to see Gunnar and dad Vinod. Arun and Liz are now expected to take a make-or-break holiday in the Caribbean to decide their future, the report said. If they split, Arun will join a long list of men who have broken Liz’s heart including actor Hugh Grant.
