Despite its resentment against India for having voted at the IAEA in Vienna in favour of the EU-3 resolution on the Iranian nuclear programme, Tehran today denied any change of heart on the economic agreements it has with New Delhi, including the $22-billion deal to supply LNG over the next 25 years.
Iran’s Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council and chief negotiator in nuclear matters Ali Larijani said last evening: ‘‘I believe friends should not be judged by a single action. Iran enjoys friendly relations with India. Of course, we have complaints about their behaviour.’’
This was echoed today by the Iranian Embassy here, which quoted Larijani’s comments in response to questions while denying a news report that Iran had decided to call off the LNG deal agreed to in June during Petroleum Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar’s visit.
‘‘The agreements between the two countries are still in force and passing through the normal processes,’’ said an Iran embassy spokesperson.
The agreement on importing 5 million tonnes of LNG from Iran was signed in a combined way by IOC, BPCL and GAIL with the National Iranian Gas Exporting Company (NIGEC). This agreement has to, however, still be approved by the board of NIGEC’s parent company National Iranian Oil Company.
The political view on the matter has had a resonance. Mohammed Reza Nematzadeh, the managing director of Iran’s National Petrochemical Company—it’s not linked to the LNG deal but has other agreements with India—today said in Tehran that these ‘‘will be implemented in due time’’.
We’re grateful, India
